What is beef tallow?

Beef tallow is pure rendered beef fat, traditionally made by slowly melting kidney suet and filtering it multiple times until only clean, creamy-white fat remains. It has been a kitchen staple across Europe for centuries, prized for its high smoke point (230 °C / 446 °F), rich flavour, and remarkable stability at high temperatures.

Our tallow comes exclusively from grass-fed cattle managed by Staatsbosbeheer, the Dutch national forestry service. These animals graze year-round on nature reserves across the Netherlands, eating only wild grasses and herbs. This results in a richer fatty acid profile with higher levels of omega-3, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K2 compared to grain-fed alternatives.

Use it for frying, roasting, searing, baking, or even as a base for natural skincare. Unlike industrial seed oils, beef tallow does not oxidize easily at high temperatures, making it one of the safest and most flavourful cooking fats available.

We render our tallow fresh every week in small batches in Oudehaske, Friesland. No factory production, no additives, no preservatives. Just pure beef fat, exactly as it should be.

Beef tallow vs. seed oils

Industrial seed oils like sunflower, canola, and soybean oil are high in polyunsaturated fats that oxidize and break down at cooking temperatures. This produces harmful compounds including aldehydes and free radicals. Despite decades of marketing, these oils were never traditional cooking fats. They are a product of industrial food processing.

Beef tallow is the opposite. It is naturally rich in stable saturated and monounsaturated fats that hold up perfectly under heat. It has been used for cooking for thousands of years across every culture that raised cattle. The shift back to animal fats is not a trend. It is a return to what worked.

Our grass-fed tallow takes this further. Pasture-raised cattle produce fat with a measurably better nutritional profile: more omega-3, more CLA, more fat-soluble vitamins. When you choose grass-fed beef tallow, you are choosing the highest quality cooking fat available.

Frequently asked questions

Beef tallow is pure rendered beef fat, traditionally made by slowly melting and filtering kidney suet from cattle. The result is a creamy white, shelf-stable cooking fat with a subtle, clean flavour and a high smoke point of 230 °C (446 °F). It has been a staple cooking fat for centuries.
Grass-fed beef tallow has a superior fatty acid profile. It contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K2. Our cattle graze year-round on Dutch nature reserves, eating only wild grasses and herbs.
Beef tallow is incredibly versatile. Use it for frying and deep-frying (smoke point 230 °C / 446 °F), roasting vegetables and potatoes, searing steaks, making pastry and pie crusts, or as a base for natural skincare products. It does not splatter and gives food a beautifully crispy finish.
Unopened, our beef tallow keeps for at least 12 months stored in a cool, dark place. Refrigerated, it lasts even longer. You can also freeze it indefinitely. Once opened, store it in the fridge and use within a few weeks.
Beef tallow is naturally stable at high temperatures and does not form harmful oxidation byproducts the way polyunsaturated seed oils do when heated. It is rich in saturated and monounsaturated fats, making it one of the most heat-stable cooking fats available. Many chefs and nutritionists are returning to traditional animal fats for this reason.

Yes. Beef tallow has a fatty acid profile remarkably similar to human skin sebum, making it an excellent natural moisturiser. Many people use pure tallow as a face and body balm, especially those with sensitive or dry skin. Grass-fed tallow is particularly rich in vitamins A, D, and K2, which support skin health.
